PHEWA biennial conference set for San Antonio
in January

Social welfare ministries conference will focus on liberation theology

by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - The 2003 biennial social welfare ministries conference of the
Presbyterian Church (USA) is set for Jan. 23-26 in San Antonio.

The theme of the conference - sponsored by the Presbyterian Health, Education
and Welfare Association (PHEWA) in cooperation with the National Ministries
Division - is "God is About To Do a New Thing," taken from Isaiah 43:19.

The conference is designed to network Presbyterians who are active in social
welfare and justice ministries, to share information about those ministries
and to provide skills training for those who want to be more involved. The
program will include worship, Bible study, keynote presentations, workshops
and site visits to projects in the San Antonio area.

Keynote speakers are Fr. Virgilio Elizondo, director of programming of
Catholic Television of San Antonio and professor at San Antonio's Mexican
American Cultural Center, and the Rev. James Noel, associate professor of
American religion at San Francisco Theological Seminary. Elizondo is
considered to be the father of United States Hispanic Theology, a branch of
Latin America-originated liberation theology. Noel, a former PHEWA board
member and president, will address liberation theology from a Reformed
perspective.

Worship will be led by the Rev. Trina Zelle, a pastor from El Paso who won
the Witherspoon Society's Andrew Murray Award in 1999 for her work in Sierra
Blanca Presbytery with immigrant women along the Mexico-New Mexico border.

Workshops have been planned that deal with such issues as healing from school
violence, building unity across cultural lines, emerging health issues, civil
resistance/disobedience, prophetic witness in the 21st century, globally
conscious worship and church-based community organizing.

Founded in 1955, PHEWA is a membership organization linking 11 issue-specific
networks: Community Ministries and Neighborhood Organizations, Presbyterians
Against Domestic Violence Network, Presbyterian AIDS Network, Presbyterians
Affirming Reproductive Options, Presbyterian Association of Specialized
Pastoral Ministries, Presbyterian Child Advocacy Network, Presbyterians for
Disabilities Concerns, Presbyterian Health Network, Presbyterian Network on
Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse, Presbyterian Serious Mental Illness Network and
the Urban Network of Congregational Leadership.
