American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 3/21/03)--The Rev. Lawrence
Hargrave, director of alumni/ae church and media relations at Colgate
Rochester Crozer Divinity School and pastor of The Church on the Hill in
Rochester, N.Y., has been named recipient of the Luke Mowbray Ecumenical
Award.

The award, which will be presented this June at the American Baptist
Churches USA Biennial Meeting in Richmond, Va., honors American Baptists who
have made significant contributions to ecumenical ministries and dialog. In
naming Hargrave, the American Baptist Churches Committee on Christian Unity
noted Hargrave's extensive work and leadership in interfaith relations.

At the Divinity School Hargrave is responsible for serving an ecumenical
population of alumni/ae and resourcing congregations ranging from Baptist to
Roman Catholic. He has hosted the Pastor's Round Table there, an effort to
provide a forum for multiracial dialog and planning.

As a leader and board member of the Greater Rochester Community of Churches
he has been instrumental in encouraging ministries that enhance education
and the empowerment of low-income families in the city.

His commitment to interfaith dialog, especially in the aftermath of the
Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, has resulted in his participation in
productive gatherings of Christians, Jews and Muslims sponsored by the mayor
of Rochester.

Hargrave's ministry as pastor of The Church on the Hill, formerly known as
South Avenue Baptist Church, also has focused on cooperative Christian
witness and outreach.

Hargrave recently served as co-interim executive minister for the American
Baptist Churches of the Rochester Genesee Region.
