Holy Week and Easter 2003
The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd Dr Rowan Williams, spent his
first Easter at Canterbury Cathedral since he was officially enthroned to the
Archbishopric on 27 February 2003.
One of the significant occasions of the week was the ancient biblical rite of
foot washing during the Maundy Thursday liturgy. It is the first time in 400
years that an Archbishop of Canterbury has performed this ceremony.
After the Easter Sunday Eucharist, the Archbishop greeted hundreds of
worshippers. In total, more than 3000 people attended the service.
Canon James M Rosenthal was in Canterbury during Holy Week capturing images.
Some of the highlights of the week can be seen at:

liturgy in Canterbury Cathedral. Archbishop Williams washed the feet of 12
people, aged between 9 and 72, likely the first time this rite has been
observed in Canterbury since the Reformation.
