80 attend Hispanic Caucus dinner
by Bill Lancaster
DENVER, May 27 - Live music and theater punctuated serious speeches and
presentations during the National Hispanic/Latino Dinner at the Hyatt Hotel.
Elder Ricardo Moreno, moderator of the Hispanic/Latino Caucus, was
the principal speaker. His address was titled "Si hay Judios y Griegos,
Esclavos y Libres" ("Yes, there are Jews, Greeks, slaves and free"). Moreno
welcomed about 80 guests, including commissioners, Assembly staff and elected
people, synod and presbytery staff, theological students and visitors.
The Rev. Hector Rodriguez, the Presbyterian Church (USA)'s associate
for Hispanic congregational enhancement, brought greetings. The Rev. Ernesto
Hernandez, chair of the Advisory Committee for Hispanic Ministries, presented
a Hispanic strategy report and a ministry overview.
The band and theatrical group were from Denver's First Avenue
Presbyterian Church. Special guests included Marj Carpenter, moderator of the
207th Assembly (1995), the Rev. Renato Alvarez, a former vice moderator of
the Hispanic Caucus, and the Rev. Janet DeVries, executive of the Synod of
the Southwest.
Others who took part included Ernesto Atencio, a commissioned lay
pastor from El Divino Salvador Church in Denver; the Rev. Noelle Damico,
coordinator of the Presbyterian Taco Bell boycott; the Rev. Jose Marti,
moderator of the Hispanic Commission of the Synod of Southern California and
Hawaii; the Rev. Luis Perez Alanoca, stated clerk of the Evangelical
Presbyterian Church of Bolivia; and Elder Raquel Yslas, chair of the Hispanic
