Online: LWF Six-Year Report - From Hong Kong to Winnipeg
A six-year report of the work of the Lutheran World Federation
(LWF) is now posted on the LWF Tenth Assembly Web site. "From
Hong Kong to Winnipeg" is the report of the LWF General Secretary
on behalf of the Council, and is available in the Federation's
four official languages - English, German, French and Spanish. It
gives an account of the life and work of the LWF, including the
decisions of its governing bodies over the past six years, as
provided for in the LWF Constitution. Highlights of the
activities carried out by the diverse LWF departments and offices
during this period are included. The report is provided to all
participants registered for the Assembly. Its full content can be

Canada's Niagara Anglican Diocese Appoints Lutheran Pastor
Johnson as Canon
Rev. Susan Johnson, vice-president of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Canada (ELCIC), and assistant to the bishop of the
Eastern Synod has been appointed as Canon of Christ's Church
Cathedral, Hamilton, Ontario, a congregation of the Anglican
Church of Canada (ACC). Johnson also serves as an adviser to the
Council of the Lutheran World Federation in the Standing
Committee for Ecumenical Affairs.
This appointment means that Johnson is invited to participate in
diocesan services, meet with the Chapter of Canons and preach or
preside at one service each year at the cathedral. This title is
usually conferred to honor Anglicans who have been of notable
service in their church.
The Very Rev. Peter Wall, Dean of the ACC Diocese of Niagara and
Rector of Christ's Church Cathedral says, "I am personally very
happy that [ACC] Bishop Ralph Spence has named Susan Johnson as
canon of this cathedral. We highly value our ecumenical
relationships and I have particularly enjoyed the close ties we
have here with the [ELCIC] Eastern Synod, with local pastors and
with Bishop Michael Pryse. She will be our first ecumenical canon
and I am thrilled to be welcoming her to the Chapter of Canons
and to this new dimension of our relationship together."
In July 2001 the ELCIC and ACC adopted "The Waterloo
Declaration," formally establishing their full communion
relationship. Full communion is not a merger of the two churches.
It affirms that they mutually recognize each other's orders of
worship, sacraments, and ordained ministries while still
maintaining their distinct identity, structures and governance.

Winnipeg Set to Welcome Lutherans from around the World
Local tourism officials and hoteliers are primed to extend the
welcome mat for the global village that will make Winnipeg its
home for ten days in July.
Cheery red "Welcome/Bienvenue" ribbons will be distributed to a
spectrum of hospitality workers who will be on the front line to
encounter the more than 800 participants of the Tenth Assembly of
the Lutheran World Federation (LWF). The Assembly, which meets
July 21-31 at the Winnipeg Convention Centre, will attract
first-time visitors including delegates and representatives of
LWF member churches worldwide.
The ribbons will act as an ice-breaker while being worn by a
variety of hotel, restaurant, attractions and convention staff
who have been briefed on the international gathering, according
to Penny McMillan, director of tourism for Destination Winnipeg,
Inc., the city's economic development and tourism agency.
The idea is that visitors will see that there are people in
Winnipeg who clearly have been expecting them, and will be
encouraged to ask questions. McMillan noted that the ribbons were
first used successfully during the World Curling Championships in
April.
(The LWF is a global communion of Christian churches in the
Lutheran tradition. Founded in 1947 in Lund (Sweden), the LWF now
has 136 member churches in 76 countries representing over 61.7
million of the 65.4 million Lutherans worldwide. The LWF acts on
behalf of its member churches in areas of common interest such as
ecumenical and interfaith relations, theology, humanitarian
assistance, human rights, communication, and the various aspects
of mission and development work. Its secretariat is located in
Geneva, Switzerland.)
