	Mid-South elects Lampe
	to district presidency

	Delegates to the LCMS Mid-South District convention, July 11-14
in Memphis, Tenn., elected a new district president, Rev. Kenneth Lampe,
senior pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Mountain Home, Ark. He was
elected on the fourth ballot.

	Lampe, 56, was installed as president during the convention. He
succeeds Rev. David Callies, 63, who decided not to have his name on the
ballot this year, after serving four three-year terms as the Mid-South
president.

	Four regional vice presidents also were elected -- Dr. Ronald
Wiese, Memphis, first vice president; Rev. Russell Shewmaker, Jonesboro,
Ark., second vice president and secretary; Rev. Jonathan Beyer, Hot
Springs, Ark.; and Rev. Barry Hildebrandt, Chattanooga, Tenn.

	Among resolutions that delegates passed is one that asks the
2004 Synod convention to establish a new system to fund mission and
ministry, primarily because of the increasing numbers of designated
gifts from individuals and congregations to districts and the Synod.

	The resolution calls on the Synod to immediately initiate a
process to develop a new financial system that remains simple,
accountable and equitable while it incorporates all its entities ..
and all its sources for funding.

	Another resolution supports the five objectives that the LCMS
Council of Presidents adopted last November in its statement titled, To
Restore Harmony and Trust within [the Synod].

	The district action calls for prayer, encourages the district
president to follow the spirit and guidance of the statement, and asks
his office to provide ongoing opportunities to address theological and
practical issues facing our Synod.

	Among other adopted resolutions were those to:

	 affirm a new partnership agreement between the district and
the East of Lake Victoria Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of
Tanzania, through LCMS World Mission;

	 encourage outreach, with a goal that each of the districts
130 congregations confirm at least one adult in 2004;

	 affirm and support the districts deacon-training program.

	The Mid-South convention was the last of 35 LCMS district
conventions held this year.
