ABCUSA: Clifton to Retire as Central Seminary President

American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 9/5/03)-The Rev. Dr. Thomas
E. Clifton, president of American Baptist-related Central Baptist
Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Kans., for the past decade, has
announced his retirement effective Dec. 31, 2003.

Clifton is the ninth president of the 102-year-old theological school.	Dr.
William Mankin, chair of Central's Board of Directors, noted in a letter
this week that Clifton "has led the seminary with wisdom and vigor...during
times of extraordinary challenges. His vision has profoundly shaped what the
seminary is today." 

Clifton is a member of the American Baptist Churches USA General Board.  He
also has served as president of the American Baptist Association of Seminary
Administrators.

He previously held pastorates in New York, Indiana, North Carolina and Ohio,
and has been a member of the National Senate of the American Baptist
Churches USA Ministers Council.

Central Baptist Theological Seminary, founded in 1901, is one of ten
theological schools related to American Baptist Churches USA.
