Diocese to mark one-year anniversary of schools settlement
[ACNS source: Anglican Journal] The diocese of Ottawa will mark 23 November
as Settlement and Reconciliation Sunday. The announcement came from the
diocesan Residential Schools Settlement Commission, which is preparing
parish resource materials to be distributed at the diocesan synod 24-25
October in Cornwall, Ontario.
This November marks a year since the federal government and General Synod,
the national office of the Anglican Church of Canada, reached an agreement
limiting the church's liability over Indian residential schools. As part of
the settlement, Canada's 30 dioceses agreed to pay $22 million over five
years toward a litigation settlement fund. General Synod will pay $3
million. The diocese of Ottawa pledged a contribution of $1.6 million.
23 November also marks the end of Restorative Justice Week, an initiative of
the Correctional Service of Canada's chaplaincy office in partnership with
faith groups. The theme this year is Pathways to a Strengthened Community.
