Seminaries still supporting international students
Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, is receiving a
$100,000 matching grant from the Lutheran Foundation of Fort Wayne to
help support the nine international students at the seminary.
Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, also continues to cover costs for
its international students.
Before last fall, international students at both seminaries were
supported by an LCMS World Mission scholarship fund that was put on hold
then because of the slump in the economy. The fund, known as CRISP
(Committee Responsible for International Scholarship Programs), comes
only from the interest on a $2 million gift to the Synod's Forward in
Remembrance fund drive of the 1980s.
Donors to the Fort Wayne seminary's international student fund
have until next May to match the $100,000 grant.
"The monies from this grant will be used for tuition, a living
stipend and health insurance for these nine students," said Deborah
Rutt, vice president for institutional advancement at the Fort Wayne
seminary.
Rutt indicated that total costs for the nine students "over the
remainder of their program" will run $302,000.
Leonard Fiedler, vice president for development at Concordia,
St. Louis, said that the seminary covered the costs for its five
students last year "with the generous assistance of faithful ...
supporters, and is committed to do the same this next year."
Fiedler said the total amount needed to cover tuition and
expenses for the St. Louis seminary's five students this year is about
$150,000.
To donate, make checks payable to "International Student Fund"
and mail to Concordia Theological Seminary, 6600 N. Clinton St., Fort
Wayne, IN 46825 or payable to "Concordia Seminary" and send to Concordia
Seminary, Development Department, 801 DeMun Ave., St. Louis, MO 63105
(write "CRISP Student Support" on the memo line).
Ken Reiner, the LCMS World Mission staff member who is staff
liaison for CRISP, said the program is beginning to recoup some of its
financial loss as the economy has improved in recent months.
"It's too early to say when the CRISP fund will be healthy
enough to once again support the international students," Reiner said.
"In the meantime, we thank God that the seminaries are making it
possible for these students to continue their studies."
