American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 12/16/03)--New York City's
Riverside Church and its senior pastor, the Rev. Dr. James A. Forbes, are
the focus of "Speaking to Power," a special Bill Moyers program set to air
9-10 p.m. Dec. 26 on PBS.
Riverside Church has served a culturally and theologically diverse
congregation for nearly 75 years. It is, according to the Moyers program,
"a remarkable house of God...a tower of steel and stone [that] has become a
monolithic skyscraper in America's religious landscape and a towering
comfort to those who worship there. An oasis of diversity, Riverside is a
thoroughly American Protestant church. In its preeminent pulpit resides Rev.
James Forbes, shaped by the inequities of racism, guided by a different
religious impulse than many of his contemporaries, and buoyed by a seemingly
boundless spiritual reserve."
The documentary will examine the wider "subtle and profound changes in the
religious fabric of America, and the prospects for peace and tolerance in
troubled times" as it looks at the ministries of Riverside Church.
