American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 5/4/04)--Naomi Carman,
former American Baptist International Ministries missionary in India, died
April 27in Bloomington, Ind.  She was 97.

Along with her late husband, Dr. John Carman, she arrived in India in 1928.
They worked at mission hospitals in Ongole and Hanamkonda before going to
Vellore, South India in 1945.  The Carmans retired from the American Baptist
Foreign Mission Society in 1967.

Naomi Carman made significant contributions to the large interdenominational
medical center at Vellore, where she served as treasurer and administrative
assistant to the director, and developed an efficient medical records
library.  She also taught Bible and directed the women's hostel.  

After retirement the Carmans remained in India until 1969, when they returned
to the U.S. to work at the Vellore Christian Medical College Board in New
York for several years.  

Dr. John Carman died in 1978.  Naomi Carman is survived by her five children:
John B. Carman, Acton, Mass.; Robert H. Carman, Bloomington, Ind.; Eleanor
Macfarlane, Bloomington, Ind.; Margaret Tegenfeldt, Poulsbo, Wash.; and Bruce
W. Carman, Seaside, Ore.  Many members of the family have served on the
mission field, and one of Naomi Carman's grandchildren, Betsy Perkins,
currently serves International Ministries at Kodaikanal International School
in India.
