25 resolutions sent to committees

RICHMOND, June - The General Assembly Committee on Bills and Overtures sent
25 commissioners' resolutions to Assembly committees Sunday night.
Two resolutions were declined, in both cases because they essentially
duplicated other items of business before the Assembly.
The 25 are:
"On Seeking a Thorough, Calm, and Reasoned Review of the USA Patriot ACT":
Committee on National Issues;
"On Reaffirming the Ethical Values of Fetal Research": Committee on Health
Issues;
"On the Murders of Women in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico": Committee on
International Issues;
"Regarding the Presbyterian Church (USA) Developing an Outline Commentary to
the Bible": Committee on Theological Issues and Institutions;
"Regarding the Presbyterian Church (USA) Call for Presbyterians to Lead a
Simpler Life": Committee on Theological Issues and Institutions;
"On Opposition to the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA)":
Committee on International Issues;
"On Appointing an Action Committee That Will Identify Media and Advertising
That Has Excessive Sex, Violence and Other Immoral Content for the Purpose of
Influencing Producers and Sponsors": Committee on National Issues;
"On Rescinding Policies Regarding Cuba That Cause Hardship to Families":
Committee on International Issues;
"On Celebrating the 'Social Creed' of the Churches and Considering a 21st
Century Social Creed": Committee on Theological Issues and Institutions;
"Basic Education": Committee on International Issues;
"On Creation of a Presbyterian Credit Card": Committee on Mission
Coordination and Budgets;
"On Providing Disability Awareness Training for Commissioners to the 217th
General Assembly": Committee on General Assembly Procedures;
"On Commissioning 2005 Mission Co-Workers During 100th New Wilmington
Missionary Conference": Committee on International Issues;
"On Developing a 'Conceptual Framework for a New Mission Funding System'":
Committee on Mission Coordination and Budgets;
"Emphasizing the Importance of Scripture": Committee on General Assembly
Procedures;
"On Strengthening Hispanic Latino Ministry": Assembly Committee on Mission
Coordination and Budgets;
"On Establishing a Palestine Working Group": Committee on Peacemaking;
"On Recognition That One of the Great Ends of the Church (G-1.0200) Is the
Preservation of Truth": Committee on Theological Issues and Institutions.
"Denial of Civil Rights in Virginia": Committee on National Issues;
"Benefits Feasibility Study": Committee on Pensions, Foundation and PILP;
"On Calling on the Stated Clerk to Justify His Endorsement of the World
Council of Churches and Reviewing PC(USA) Relationship with the World Council
of Churches": Recommendation 1 is referred to the Committee on Peacemaking;
Recommendation 2 to the Committee on Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations;
"On Supporting the Federal Marriage Amendment": Committee on National Issues;
"On Cooperative Ecumenical Strategy": Committee on Ecumenical and Interfaith
Relations;
"On Recognizing Civil Marriage for Same-Gender Couples": Committee on
National Issues;
"On Recording Commissioners' Votes in the Minutes of the General Assembly,
Part 1": Committee on General Assembly Procedures.
Three items pulled from the consent agenda on Saturday also were referred:
2002 Referral: Item 13-08. Overture 02-52. "On Pastoral Resources for Women
Who Have Experienced Abortion - from the Presbytery of Donegal: Assembly
Committee on Health Issues;
2002 Referral: Item 09-04. "Recommendation that the 214th General Assembly
(2002) Grant a Two-Year Deferment to Congregational Ministries Division
Publishing in Order to Make Available a 'Library of Resources' in Addition to
the Current General Assembly Action to 'Review and Revise' the 'God's Gift of
Sexuality' Curriculum" (in response to Overture 00-70, 1999 Referral 27.007,
Overture 99-46 and 2000 Referral 25.085) - from the General Assembly Council
(Minutes, 2002, Part 1, pp. 45, 493-94): Committee on Mission Coordination
and Budgets;
Alternate Resolution to 2003 Referral: Item 06-06. Overture 03-23. "On
Appointing a Pastoral Group Whose Primary Concern Would Be Gay, Lesbian,
Bisexual and Transgendered Members and Their Families in Our Local Churches"
- from the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta (Minutes, 2003, Part 1, pp. 43-44,
401): Committee on Mission Coordination and Budgets.
The declined resolutions are: "On Initiating a Strategic Planning and
Interpretation Mission on Behalf of the Presbyterian Church (USA) to
Strengthen Its Ministry and Effectiveness"; and "Concerning the Abuse in
Iraq."
