Taiwan Church News 2738, 16-22 August 2004
Reported by Staff. Translated and Rewritten by David Alexander
Tainan Presbytery's Church and Society Committee seeks to strengthen
churches'
ability to sing in Taiwanese. To that end it created a programme of Church
Choir ex changes. The first step was a "choir contest" held on August 15th
at
Barclay Memorial East Gate Presbyterian Church in Tainan. 13 choirs
participated, comprising almost 400 singers. The Rev. Kho Thian-hian was the
moderator of the meeting and members of the faculty of music at nearby Tainan
Theological College served as judges.
Committee chairman Kang Chhiu-phang said, "The contest was open to any
church choir or singing group, but not more than two choirs from any one
congregation. One anthem was assigned and others were chosen from a
prepared
list. All tunes were from the Taiwanese folk repertory."
First prize was taken by the church from Giok-chhe, second by a choir from
East Gate church, and third by the choir of Tung-ning church.
