Title: Hungarian Reformed Church Medical Student Interns in Taiwan
Taiwan Church News 2740, 30 August - 5 September 2004
Reported by Li Hsin-ren. Translated and Rewritten by David Alexander

This summer a member of the Reformed Church in Hungary came to Taiwan to
undertake a medical internship at Mackay Memorial Hospital, an agency of the
Presbyterian Church in Taiwan (PCT). Ms. Kataliu Arday spent the month of
August observing medical procedures at Mackay. She was the first in what looks
to be an ongoing programme of exchange between the two countries that do not
share diplomatic relations. The churches involved, however, share a close
kinship.

PCT General Secretary William J. K. Lo said, "Some years ago our partners in
Hungary approached us with a design proposal, hoping that Taiwan would send
some people their way. That didn't work out, but this exchange has, and Ms.
Arday is with us."

Blonde and blue-eyed Arday is a fourth year medical student in her home
country. She has done the rounds of every department in Mackay this summer.
Thankful for the exposure and experience, she says that she finds Taiwan's
medical facilities very advanced and feels the opportunity has been valuable.
She says that the staff of Mackay went out of the way to keep her informed and
improve her medical knowledge.

Speaking of the mission environment in her homeland, she said that one big
problem is that though many people identify themselves as Christians, few are
involved in church life. She says that her own church has been working to
respond to this crisis of participation.

Her hopes following graduation and medical qualification are to work with a
non-governmental medical organization or with the World health Organization.
She wants to serve outside of her native land.

On August 29th Ms. Arday departed from Taiwan to return home, but expressed
hopes that one day she will again visit Taiwan.
