Title: Homeless Aboriginal Family Mourns Grandfather Lost in Landslide
Taiwan Church News 2741, 6 - 12 September 2004
Reported by Yang Shu-hao. Translated and Rewritten by David Alexander

Many of the victims of Typhoon Aere, which struck Taiwan late in August, were
memorialized at a joint service at the municipal Hsin-chu Funeral Park where
families set up makeshift memorial halls and slept in tents or other temporary
shelters. Included in the crowd were the relatives of Chen Ju-huei, a member
of the Tayal Aboriginal Ulay-Pinzitan Presbyterian Church. His grandson Chen
Chi-yeong greeted visitors saying, "This is a test sent to our family from
God." The younger Mr. Chen has a strong faith and testifies to his
grandfather's example. "Grandpa was frequently involved in service through his
church. He has now gone to his heavenly home, and I'll see him there
eventually."
Speaking of his grandfather's demise, he says that a landslide took the
house while the elderly man was watching television on the ground floor. "I
ran down to see what had happened. It only was a matter of seconds, but the
downstairs was swept clear. That's what happened to grandpa."
The family is now homeless, and for the time being is dwelling at the
funeral park.
