Title: Christian University President in Taiwan Calls "Foul!" Regarding Media
Reporting
Taiwan Church News 2741, 6 - 12 September 2004
Reported by Li Hsin-ren. Translated and Rewritten by David Alexander
"A securely rooted tree fears not the typhoon!" Dr. Yeh Neng-jie, president
of Aletheia University, an agency of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan (PCT),
began his remarks with this phrase as he addressed what he felt to be
erroneous media reports issued in advance of the upcoming academic year. He
asserted that Aletheia operates from a firm foundation of faith and has no
fear of being examined. He was responding to a report carried on a cable
television network that his school had the nation's lowest standards for
acceptance of students into its programmes.
In contrast to what was reported, he said, Aletheia University in recent
years' progress is plain to see, and its future holds continued growth. He
called on churches and believers to continue to trust and support the school.
When the executive committee of the General Assembly of the PCT met on 2nd
September, Dr. Yeh was asked to speak three times to explain reports that
Aletheia accepted students with particularly low mathematics scores. He said
that the reports were in error, and that the mathematics scores of the
school's new students in the English, mathematics and physics departments were
comparatively high. The media organization that reported the scores as low was
not comparing like departments.
The reports began on the TVBS cable network. When Dr. Yeh called TVBS to
indicate his displeasure and the network's error he pointed out that no
numerical data were included in the report. He also noted a tag line at the
very end of the report in which it was said that at some schools a student
with low scores can be admitted through pressure from the Board of Directors.
He firmly objected to the juxtaposition of this item next to a report about
his school, where the board does no such thing. When he protested this
arrangement, TVBS replied, "Too bad!"
During the executive committee's meeting the General Assembly's audit
committee reported that Aletheia University was behind on payment of its
assessments. For the current year it owes 1,100,000 Taiwan Yuan (27,500 Euros)
and for the previous year another 2,123,100 Taiwan Yuan (53,077 Euros). Dr.
Yeh had no reply, but said that he was open to discussion on the matter.
