Mike McCurry, former press secretary to President Clinton and a delegate to
the 2004 General Conference, is joining John Kerry's campaign for the
presidency as an adviser, according to news reports.
The Associated Press reported Sept. 14 that McCurry will be traveling with
Kerry as a non-paid senior adviser. He will start Sept. 15.
"He will be a very big part of the team," campaign spokesman David Wade said
in a Bloomberg News story. A call from United Methodist News Service to the
campaign had not been returned by press time.
A lifelong United Methodist, McCurry was a delegate to the church's top
legislative assembly last spring in Pittsburgh. He is a member of St. Paul's
United Methodist Church in Kensington, Md., where he has served as Sunday
school superintendent and teacher.
United Methodists are on both major-party tickets in this year's presidential
campaign. President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney are both United
Methodists, as is John Edwards, the Democratic vice presidential nominee.
McCurry served as press secretary for President Clinton from 1995 to 1998, a
period that saw the White House weathering the Monica Lewinsky scandal and
impeachment. Previously, he was spokesman for the Department of State.
He is a principal in the consulting firm of Public Strategies Washington and
chairman of Grassroots Enterprise Inc., an issue advocacy software provider.
He serves on several boards and advisory councils. He is an at-large member
of the governing commission of United Methodist Communications, an agency of
the United Methodist Church. (UMNS is a unit of the agency.) He also has been
on the board of governors of Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington.
