Taiwan Church News 2754, 6 to 12 December 2004
Reported by Li Hsin-ren. Trans. & rewritten by David Alexander
Miss Wu Pei-jen, a member of Pa-ter Presbyterian Church southern Taiwan's
Kaohsiung County, accompanied another church member, Chiou Chi-ming, on a
short-term mission project near Chiang-mai in Thailand. On the night of 5th
December a car in which they were riding was involved in an accident and Ms.
Wu lost her life. Mr. Chiou and Rev. Wang Jen-nae (the resident missionary)
were seriously injured and placed into intensive care. The Rev. Cheng
Yu-chih, pastor of Pa-ter Presbyterian Church, has accompanied the families
to
Thailand to see to affairs. The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church
in Taiwan (PCT) moved to assist and calls on church members to pray for the
family of Ms. Wu.
Wu, Chiou and Wang were returning from a service project in a mountainous
area
on the evening of the 5th when the accident occurred. They were sent to the
Chiang-mai Christian Hospital. The next day Rev. Wang phoned Taiwan and spoke
with Rev. Cheng, telling him what had happened.
Rev. Cheng told the Taiwan Church News that when he learned of the death of
Ms. Wu. he immediately went to her family's home to express the church's
care.
He called on another Taiwanese missionary in Thailand, Lin Ren-shan, to act
on
the church's behalf. By noon that day the church convened a prayer meeting.
According to Rev. Cheng Ms Wu was 29 years old. She had been baptized last
year, the first and only Christian in her immediate family. When Rev. Wang
returned to Taiwan from Thailand to give a missionary report, Ms Wu was
deeply
moved and volunteered to join a short-term mission project. On October 26th
she and Mr. Chiou went to Thailand, planning to return home at the end of
December.
In response to her death while on missionary service, the congregation's
board
has offered to take on the total cost of the funeral.
Mr. Chiou suffered internal injuries and is expected to stay in intensive
care
for a week, after which he will be under observation for another season.
Rev.
Wang went home after surgery.
Upon learning of the situation, the Rev. William J. K. Lo, General Secretary
of the PCT, offered prayers for the comfort of the Wu family and the recovery
of Chiou and Wang. The PCT has asked its Thai partner, the Churches of Christ
of Thailand, to act in its stead.
