A Message from the Revd Canon John L. Peterson on the tragedy in Asia

In these last few days, the horrific media images of the aftermath of the
tsunamis that struck the coasts that border the Indian Ocean on Sunday have
been shocking and almost beyond our comprehension. We struggle to absorb the
scale of the human tragedy unfolding daily in Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia,
Thailand and yet more distant coastlands. The worldwide Anglican family
reaches out in compassion and prayer to all those throughout the region whose
lives have been so dramatically and cruelly disrupted by this disaster. We
remember the thousands who have died, the families who mourn for them, the
injured and displaced. We pray for those engaged in the work of rescue and
recovery, the medical teams and those now bringing urgently needed aid.

Through the generosity of the Compass Rose Society the Offices of the Anglican
Communion has already responded with a grant to the Diocese of Colombo. I urge
you to support the task of bringing emergency relief to the people of South
Asia by contacting your local parish or diocesan office for details of how to
send your gift as a token of your compassion and solidarity with those who
suffer now.

The Revd Canon John L. Peterson Secretary General 28 December 2004
