Lectures
[ENS] The Rev. Peter J. Gomes will be the featured lecturer at the
Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest's (ETSS) 2005 Harvey
Lectures on Monday, February 7, in Austin, Texas.
Gomes is widely regarded as one of America's most distinguished
preachers and Christian thinkers. His 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. lectures in
Knapp Auditorium are open to the public without charge and he will also
preach at the Monday noon service in Christ Chapel.
The Harvey Lectures, organized annually by seminarians, honor the late
Hudnall Harvey, dean of ETSS from 1968 to his death in 1972.
Gomes, an American Baptist minister, has been Plummer Professor of
Christian Morals and Pusey Minister in Harvard University's Memorial
Church since 1974. He is regarded as the symbolic center of Harvard's
spiritual life and teaches in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and in
the Harvard Divinity School.
A past recipient of Harvard University's Phi Beta Kappa Teaching Award,
Gomes is an Honorary Fellow of Emmanuel College in the University of
Cambridge, England, where the Gomes Lectureship is established in his name.
Twenty-seven colleges and universities have awarded Gomes an honorary
doctoral degree.
Among his best-selling books are Strength for the Journey: Biblical
Wisdom for Daily Living (2003); The Good Life: Truths That Last in
Times of Need (2002); The Good Book: Reading the Bible with Mind and
Heart and Sermons: Biblical Wisdom for Daily Living; and ten volumes of
sermons.
Gomes also appeared in a February 2004 segment of CBS: 60 Minutes that
explored the "Rise of the Righteous Army." The February 2003 issue of
Sojourner Magazine contained his article "Patriotism Is Not Enough:
Christian Conscience In a Time of War."
