American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 1/19/05)--Drs. Charles
and Barbara Chicks of Sunnyvale, Calif., long active in a wide range of
American Baptist ministries, have been named recipients of the Cora and
John Sparrowk President's Award of American Baptist Churches USA.

The award, which will be presented at the Biennial Meeting of American
Baptist Churches USA next July 1-3, 2005 in Denver, Colo., honors
American Baptists who have "over a period of years made an exceptional
and outstanding contribution to the life of Christ's church; and in life
and service manifest richly the fruits and gifts of the Spirit."

Charles Chicks is a former member of the ABCUSA General Board, Board of
Educational Ministries and World Relief Committee. He has served on
boards of American Baptist-related Linfield College in McMinnville,
Oreg., and American Baptist Seminary of the West in Berkeley, Calif.
Within American Baptist Churches of the West he has held numerous
leadership responsibilities: president, vice president, vice chair of
the Executive Minister Search Committee, chair of Ordination Commission
and member of the Board of Managers, Executive Committee, Camp Financial
Development Committee and Harvest 2000 Advanced Giving Committee.

Barbara Chicks has been treasurer of the American Baptist Churches of
the West and has provided leadership for American Baptist Women's
Ministries regionally and nationally. She recently completed a term as
chair of the American Baptist Foundation of the ABC of the West, and
also served ABF there as chair of the Board Development Committee.

Both have been active in committees and boards of the American Baptist
Homes of the West, especially at Pilgrim Haven in Los Altos and The
Terraces at Los Gatos. According to ABHOW President/CEO David Ferguson,
"Their commitment to seniors is evident. They have been generous in
their time, energy and talents. ABHOW and our residents have been
richly blessed to call Charles and Barbara Chicks both good friends and
faithful servants."

The Chickses also have been lay leaders at several churches in the San
Jose, Calif., area, including First Baptist Church in Santa Clara.

"The Sparrowk Award commends lives of longstanding service to Christ
through American Baptist ministries, and it will be a privilege to honor
Charles and Barbara Chicks for living out their Christian witness in so
many ways within our denomination," said American Baptist Churches USA
General Secretary the Rev. Dr. A. Roy Medley. "They have impacted
countless lives and have set an example of Christ-centered sharing that
is an inspiration for all of us."
