APCE president dies on eve of annual convention

Becky Sutherland succumbs to cancer

by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - Just three weeks before the annual convention of the Association
of Presbyterian Church Educators (APCE), the organization's president, Becky
Sutherland, died of abdominal cancer. She succumbed Jan. 13.

Sutherland, 55, who lived in Cupertino, CA, was diagnosed with the
disease last spring. She initially responded to treatment during a lengthy
hospital stay and moved to Portland, OR, to be closer to her family. But her
condition deteriorated rapidly over the last couple of months.

APCE friends said she was determined to live until this year's
convention, which begins Feb. 2 in Vancouver, BC.

A memorial service will be held Feb. 12 at West Valley Presbyterian
Church in Cupertino. Her life and dedication to APCE will also be remembered
during the APCE convention.
