Advisory:
Communication forum, party for book on the civil rights issue that
transformed TV

The public may own the airwaves, but who is making sure that television
viewers are watching stations that are meeting the needs of their
communities? Hear how the process started with a precedent-setting case
that continues to resonate today.

What:

Communication forum and book party for Kay Mills’ new book,
"Changing Channels, The Civil Rights Case that Transformed Television”

When & Where:

Thursday, April 21, 2005
6:30 p.m.
Georgetown University Law Center
Hotung International Law Building, Room 2000
500 First Street, N.W.
Washington, D.C.

Who:

Kay Mills, is a career journalist and author of four other books in
addition to “Changing Channels.”

The Rev. Everett C. Parker, the founder of the Office of Communication of
the United Church of Christ. Dr. Parker directed OC Inc. from 1957 to
1983, and was the driving force behind the challenge to WLBT’s license
renewal.

Randall Pinkston, a correspondent with CBS News, grew up in Jackson, Miss.
He was hired as one of the first beneficiaries of an affirmative-action
hiring push by radio station WLBT in Jackson while he was a student at
Millsaps College.

Gloria Tristani is Managing Director of the Office of Communication of the
United Church of Christ. She served as a Commissioner on the Federal
Communications Commission from 1997 to 2001.

Professor Angela Campbell is the Director of the Citizens Communications
Center Project of the Institute for Public Representation at Georgetown
University Law Center.

Why:

Because in a world of media consolidation and a new FCC environment, the
people need to know who is watching out for their interests, working to
assure that their rights as television viewers are protected.
