Special Event April 21 to highlight Civil Rights Case that Transformed TV
Kay Mills' book centerpiece of panel and book reception at Georgetown
University Law Center

Washington, DC

What:
Communication panel and reception for Kay Mills' book, "Changing Channels,
The Civil Rights Case that Transformed Television," which explores the
1960s case involving WLBT in Jackson, Miss. The case established that the
airwaves belong to the public and that stations must act in the public
interest and meet community needs.

Panelists to include:
Kay Mills, a career journalist and author. "Changing Channels" is her
latest book.

The Rev. Everett C. Parker, founder of the Office of Communication of the
United Church of Christ. Parker directed OC Inc. from 1957 to 1983, and
was the driving force behind the challenge to WLBT's license renewal.

Randall Pinkston, a correspondent with CBS News. Pinkston grew up in
Jackson, Miss., and was hired as one of the first beneficiaries of an
affirmative-action hiring push by radio station WLBT in Jackson while he
was a student at Millsaps College.

Gloria Tristani, Managing Director of the Office of Communication of the
United Church of Christ. She served as a Commissioner on the Federal
Communications Commission from 1997 to 2001.

Professor Angela Campbell, Director of the Citizens Communications Center
Project of the Institute for Public Representation at Georgetown
University Law Center.

Focus:
In a world of media consolidation and a new FCC environment, the people
need to know who is watching out for their interests, working to assure
that their rights as television viewers are protected.
