American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 6/6/05)--Arthur W.
Carnahan, who brings more than 20 years experience in marketing,
fundraising and administration, began June 1 as director of development
for the American Baptist Historical Society.

Carnahan has worked most recently at Central-Hudelson Baptist Children's
Home and Family Services in Centralia, Ill., which is related to
American Baptist National Ministries. He is a member of First Baptist
Church in Centralia.

Funding for the first three years of the development position has been
made possible by the generous gift of an anonymous donor and by
designated matching gifts from other supporters. Dr. Deborah Van
Broekhoven, ABHS executive director, noted, "Both the Historical Society
Board and staff are excited about Mr. Carnahan's joining the ABHS team
and his leadership in developing new funding sources for the Historical
Society and its ministry of memory."

The American Baptist Historical Society was founded in 1853. Currently
its collections are housed in two locations: the denominational archives
for American Baptist Churches USA in Valley Forge, Pa., and the Samuel
Colgate Historical Library housed at Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity
School in Rochester, N.Y. Collectively these holdings are the largest
collection of materials by and about Baptists, with the Rochester
library serving as the ABHS repository for local, regional and
institutional records; historical resources about other Baptist groups;
and an extensive collection of books and periodicals.

Historical Society staff and board members currently are gathering
information on how best to consolidate holdings, staff and operations in
one location-a decision that is expected to be made by the ABHS Board at
the end of September.

Information about the work of the American Baptist Historical Society is
