STATEMENT BY THE GENERAL SECRETARY OF THE AACC

REV. DR. MVUME DANDALA, ON THE CURRENT SITUATION

IN ETHIOPIA

The General Secretary of the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC), Rev.
Dr. Mvume Dandala has called on the Ethiopian Government to opt for a
peaceful resolutions of the current stand-off between the Students, Trade
Unionists and the Government of Ethiopia.

Reacting on the events following the declaration of the recent election
results which have been disputed by students of Addis Ababa University, Dr.
Dandala urged the Students, the Church, the Civil Society Groups and the
Ethiopian Government to collectively come to the round table as a basis of
finding a lasting solutions through dialogue. Violence and conflicts he
said, hurts Africa in many ways as well as causing everlasting pain of deaths!!

He urged the member Churches of the AACC and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church
to take lead in finding creative ways through dialogue to solve the current
conflicts in the country. He went on to add that the Church in Africa and
African Governments must at all times place the Sanctity of Human life and
the protection of human life by Governments as a priority. African
governments, he said, are, therefore, called upon to be flexible enough and
ready to develop broader peaceful frameworks as the best options for
solving conflicts.

Given the African governments commitment and indeed the Ethiopian
Government s commitment to the promotion of democratic governance and
democratic ideals, he therefore urged the Ethiopian Government to extend an
live branch of toleration and accommodation of her citizens aspirations as
they seek to develop other productive ways of tackling the challenges that
face their great country Ethiopia. The respect of Human Rights and the
Right to life cannot he said, be protected under anarchy and chaos, but
under a peaceful environment. This he said, is what God desires for his
people all over the World.

Dr. Dandala reiterated the position of the AACC of standing in solidarity
with the efforts of the Churches in Ethiopia and other Actors which stand
for Peace, Dialogue, Toleration and Protection of Human Life. He said, God
values Human Life adding that God wishes all God s children abundant life
of hope, security and prosperity . Unconditional prevalence of peace he
said, is therefore, a must for humanity.
