Several days of continuous rain beginning on 11th June brought flooding to
Pingtung and Kaohsiung counties in South Taiwan. Though church members were
affected, no congregations of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan reported
damage to their facilities.  Farmers belonging to Kan-ting Church in
Pingtung County found their fields flooded. Their pastor, Liao Ching-wen
said, ¡§All lowland areas in the parish suffered flooding, church members
were not spared. But the harvest had already been taken in so farmers¡¦
livelihoods are not threatened.¡¨  The church building is on higher ground,
so was not harmed. Other congregations in Pingtung also reported ¡§all is
well.¡¨

In Kaohsiung County the Rev. Wang Kuen-yi, pastor of Ren-hsiung Church and
member of the General Assembly¡¦s Church and Society Committee, reported
that his parish in Ren-wu township and neighboring Niao-song township was
flooded, but that the high waters quickly receded. His concern was for
remote mountain areas where he heard that there had been landslides.

Among the members of Rev. Wang¡¦s congregation, one family had their house
flooded. This is not the first time that people in the area have
experienced such problems, because their homes are located in a low area.

The highway from Niao-song to Ren-mei flooded, but churches in the area
reported all was well, even though at all congregations many members were
prevented by high water from attending worship on the 12th.

Rev. Wang urged church members in areas where there are natural disasters
to report them within 12 hours so that the church and society committee can
dispatch response.
