Our Ref: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

To Our Sudanese Brothers and Sisters

It is with profound sadness and sorrow that we learned of the tragic loss of His Excellency, Dr. John Garang Mabior, the Vice President of Sudan and President of Southern Sudan.

The untimely death of Dr. John Garang has robbed the people of Sudan, and all of Africa in general of a dedicated leader. We at the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) wish to express our condolences at this time of grief to the family and friends of the late Dr. Garang, the Sudan Church and the entire nation of the Sudan.

The death of Dr. Garang may have serious implications for Sudan at this time of transition. Dr. Garang was very instrumental in the peace process in Sudan, which was finally signed in 2004.

Dr. Garang struggled with the people of the Sudan through the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army since the sixties, culminating in the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in Nairobi. He was one of the architects of the Comprehensive Peace Accord that brought hope to the people of Sudan and those of Southern Sudan in particular. It was not an easy one to broker.

Through the entire length of the peace process, Dr. Garang displayed great commitment and dedication to the cause of his people, peace and liberation of the Southern Sudan.

He fought a good fight for the liberation of south Sudan but death has stopped him from witnessing the full implementation of his desire for a liberated southern Sudan, a dream which was only beginning to come to fruition.

At this time of great loss, we appeal to the people of Sudan to be calm and demonstrate that commitment to peace that Dr. Garang had wished for when he signed the Peace Agreement. It is our sincere hope and prayer at the AACC that the Government of Sudan will live up to the hopes of people of Sudan.

We wish to convey our condolences to Madame Rebecca Garang and her family for the loss of a dear husband, father, and brother.

We at the AACC pledge our support and prayer during this difficult time. May God grant the people of Sudan endurance and comforts in this time of grief.

Rev. Dr. Mvume Dandala:
General Secretary AACC
