and Mission Volunteer, Dies

American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 9/2/05)--Florence
Skinner, a retired corrections officer and committed partner in ministry
with National Ministries, American Baptist Churches USA, died August 31.
She was 87.

Skinner served as a Volunteer In Mission with National Ministries from
1990-2000. Her first assignment was at The Riverside Church, New York,
N.Y., tutoring students in conversational English. Skinner served on the
Board of National Ministries from 1989-1992 and 1992-1996, and was on
the affirmative action committee of the General Board of the
denomination.

Starting in 1991, Skinner also volunteered as an alternate
nongovernmental organization representative to the United Nations for
American Baptist Churches, USA. "She gave herself to the world and to
her relationships, tasks and opportunities with total commitment and
enthusiasm as an act of faithfulness to her Lord," says Dwight Lundgren,
coordinator of intercultural ministry and reconciliation. "Florence
considered the work of the United Nations to be a reflection of the love
of Christ for the world, as well as a celebration of the vibrant
diversity of God's creation."

The viewing is Wed., Sept. 7, from 4 to 7 p.m., with a service
following, at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 279 Lafayette Avenue, Brooklyn,
N.Y. 11238 (cross streets: Washington Avenue and St. James Place).
Skinner is survived by two sisters: Barbara Wiggan and Andreà Skinner;
and a granddaughter, Sikkim Assing.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the scholarship
fund of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Condolences may be sent to the family
in care of Sikkim Assing at 185 Hall Street, Apt. 508, Brooklyn, N.Y.
