Christians to join on 'party line'
to pray for peace in Jerusalem

JERUSALEM - Christians around the world are being asked to participate in the
third annual "Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem," an event organized
by evangelical groups that is scheduled for Oct. 2.

The event will be a teleconference. Participants will dial a special
number to join others around the world in prayers for peace in the Holy Land
via a free conference-call service. Prayer leaders in the United States,
Israel, Europe and Africa will lead the services.

Last year, 52,000 congregations in 72 nations took part in the
prayers, which coincide with the Jewish High Holidays, including the Day of
Atonement. The prayers are supported by numerous evangelical organizations
including the National Association of Evangelicals and the Assemblies of God
churches.

"Jerusalem is at the very heart of what is happening in the world,
politically and spiritually," said Ted Haggard, of the National Association
of Evangelicals. "As Christians have been doing for years, we must pray that
God would bless Jerusalem and bring its people peace and freedom."

The conference will be managed by Greater Calling, a non-profit
Christian teleconferencing group that allows people worldwide to unite in
simultaneous prayer. It was founded in response to the tsunami disaster that
devastated Southeast Asia in December 2004.

"The International Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem will be
held annually on the first Sunday of every October, until the coming of the
Messiah," organizers said. "Our call is for sustained, fervent, informed
global intercession for the plans and purposes of God for Jerusalem and all
her people. Trained prayer leaders in the U.S., in Israel, in Europe and in
Africa will lead specific Biblical prayer points for all the people of Israel
- Jewish and Arab - and the peace promised for Jerusalem."
