American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 10/7/05)--In the
aftermath of Hurricane Rita--now that the waters have receded,
essential services largely have been restored, and many people have
returned to their homes-staff of the American Baptist Churches of the
South (ABCOTS) have assessed conditions affecting the region's churches
and parishioners.

ABCOTS reports that none of the churches in the hurricane-impacted areas
suffered major structural damage, although some have significant
problems resulting from flooding. The insurance carried by the churches
will not completely cover the costs of repairs and refurbishing, and
some assistance will be needed.

Dr. Walter L. Parrish II, executive minister of the region, noted,
"ABCOTS is deeply appreciative of the many prayers, expressions of
concern, contributions and the outpouring of support received," adding
that ABCOTS is in the process of determining how best to utilize the
funds given to minister to the hurricane victims.

ABCOTS continues to work in concert with Church World Service and
National Ministries to bring the much needed relief and restoration.
Additional and ongoing information on the region's relief efforts is
available on the regions Web site--www.abcots.org.

American Baptists wishing to support relief efforts following Hurricanes
Katrina and Rita can go through their church's monthly report of mission
support, designating contributions "OGHS-Hurricane Katrina/Rita." For
online contributions go to the "Give Now" option available on either
www.abcusamissions.org or www.abc-usa.org.
