Grand Rapids, Mich. - Days after a 7.6-magnitude quake, the death toll
in South Asia continues to mount. As survivors struggle cope, the
Christian Reformed Church, through the Christian World Relief Committee
(CRWRC), is responding.
Saturday's quake killed over 30,000 people, and an additional 43,000
people were injured. Experts predict that the death toll will continue
to rise. Survivors are in shock as they seek food and shelter. In some
areas of northwestern Pakistan entire villages were wiped out.
CRWRC is working with other North American relief organizations to
develop strategies to get food and other essentials to earthquake
survivors as fast as possible. The response will likely include
emergency food, water, and shelter in the short-term, and reconstruction
in the long-term.
CRWRC is seeking $250,000 to respond to the earthquake in Pakistan,
India, and Afghanistan. Financial donations should be marked "South Asia
Earthquake 2005" and sent to CRWRC at 2850 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, Grand
Rapids, MI 49560. Credit card donations can also be given by calling
1-800-55-CRWRC or through CRWRC's website at www.crwrc.org.
For more information, contact CRWRC Director Andrew Ryskamp at (616)
