STAUNTON, VA - Mary Baldwin College graduate Sarah K. Small, 25, a first
lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, was killed in northern Egypt on Sept. 19.
Small, who was not a Presbyterian, graduated from Mary Baldwin in 2002,
earning a bachelor's degree in political science with minors in
communications and leadership studies. A public affairs officer assigned to
Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, VA, she had been in the Middle East for
about two weeks for a training exercise. The native of Herndon, VA, died in a
one-vehicle accident. A non-denominational memorial service was held Oct. 7
at First Presbyterian Church in Staunton, VA. Small will be buried at
Arlington National Cemetery on Dec. 2.

SPOKANE, WA - Whitworth College was recently awarded a $500,000 grant from
the Lilly Endowment to continue its project, "Discerning Vocation: Community,
Context and Commitment," launched in 2001 with a $2 million endowment grant.
The project helps students, faculty, staff, alumni, and others to connect
their gifts and abilities with the larger needs of society.

DANVILLE, KY - All first-year students at Centre College completed an online
alcohol-abuse-prevention program, AlcoholEdu for College, during the summer.
The program is part of Centre's comprehensive effort to help students guard
their safety and health. AlcoholEdu, which is used by more than 450 U.S.
colleges, takes about two-and-a-half hours to complete and includes
confidential surveys that will provide success measures for the institution.

ASHEVILLE, NC - Sandra Hayslette, Ph.D., a professor of Appalachian and
global studies at Warren Wilson College, has been named editor of the Journal
of Appalachian Studies, the scholarly publication of the Appalachian Studies
Association. The journal, which is published twice a year in partnership with
Marshall University in Huntington, WV, presents serious scholarship about the
history, culture or society of the Appalachian region.
