Boyer set to speak at October 29 workshop in Virginia
[Episcopal News Service] Dr. Horace Boyer, composer, arranger, and editor
of the 1993 revision of the hymnal "Lift Every Voice and Sing," is the
keynote speaker for the Southern Virginia chapter of the Leadership
Program for Musicians (LPM) alumni event and workshop October 29, 8:30
a.m. to 4 p.m. at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, Bon Air, Virginia.
LPM is a nationally recognized education program sponsored by the
Episcopal Church USA and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
Boyer, professor emeritus of music theory and African-American music at
the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, is an acknowledged scholar
in the field of African-American gospel music. He has directed numerous
choirs, and has published many articles in scholarly journals.
The workshop day will include:
* A practical demonstration on the introduction and teaching of music
from the Afro-American tradition to congregations and choirs;
* An opportunity for participants to learn the "ins and outs" of
performing music from the Afro-American tradition;
* An opportunity for conversation with Boyer, Dr. Ray Glover, LPM board
chair, and other workshop attendants.
It will conclude with a Festival of Hymnody from the Afro-American
tradition.
Registration, which includes lunch, is $20. Current LPM students and
alumni will be guests for the event.

Carl MaultsBy is the founder and executive artistic director of

music and to developing and showcasing the works of contemporary African
American composers. He holds degrees in Jazz/Commercial Composition,
Music, and Mathematics. He has conducted choirs for the Harry Belafonte
World Tours. He is active as a composer, arranger, clinician, and
conductor.
