AACC General Secretary Expresses Concern over Sudan Chairing African Union
General Secretary of the All Africa Conference of Churches Rev. Dr. H.
Mvume Dandala joined with a number of voices raising concerns about the
possibility of Sudan chairing the African Union.
Speaking at the All Africa Conference of Churches Compound in Nairobi, Rev.
Dr. Dandala noted that the African and Global communities need to be
concerned by the prospect of the Sudan holding the African Union Chair at
this time According to Dandala, It is unfair to call upon Sudan to chair
the AU at this point in time given the critical nature of the Sudan problem
a problem which requires proper attention not only by the government of the
Sudan but also from the Ecumenical community.
We at the AACC wish to prioritize resolving the tensions in the Sudan, Rev.
Dandala continued to say. We believe that the Sudanese government is
expected by the international community to resolve key issues surrounding
Darfur.
Rev. Dandala also noted that for the Sudan to effectively chair the AU, the
Sudanese government needed the internal support of the Church and of the
people of Sudan, and that the fragile hold on peace following the civil war
in the Sudan and the reports of violence and oppression in Darfur have yet
to be resolved, raising concerns among many Sudanese living within the
country and abroad.
Likewise, according to Dandala, because of the precariousness of the
situation in the Sudan, the AU must be seen as an impartial body:
It is crucial that any conflict of interest in leadership of AU should be
avoided for the sake of the AU and for the integrity of the support that
Africa should give to Sudan.
According to wire reports, the host of the AU summit are traditionally
elected to chair the AU. However, citing issues of credibility and its
efforts to improve democracy in Africa, Five African heads of state have
asked the Sudan to withdraw its self-nomination for the chair of the AU
