Notes about people

by Jerry L. Van Marter

The Rev. Parker T. Williamson, the moving force behind The
Presbyterian Layman since his appointment as the paper's editor in 1988, has
retired.

Williamson, of Lenoir, NC, turned 65 last summer. He was granted
"honorably retired" status by Western North Carolina Presbytery on Nov. 1.

He will continue to serve the publication as editor emeritus and
"senior correspondent."

The Rev. John M. Irvine, who served on the faculty and staff of San
Francisco Theological Seminary from 1968 to 1994, died on Jan. 18 after a
lengthy illness. He was 78.

Irvine, a Philadelphia native, arrived at SFTS during the tumultuous
60s. He and his wife, Lily, endeared themselves to the campus community with
their wonderful parties, including their legendary "Pre-Thanksgiving Bashes."

A memorial service was held on Jan. 28 in Stewart Chapel on campus.

The National Staff Association at the Presbyterian Center in
Louisville recently elected two new officers. Betsy Blocker, a 10-year staff
member who works for the Presbyterian Investment and Loan Program, was chosen
as president, and Ida Smith-Williams, a 17-year veteran of the Office of
Research Services, was elected treasurer.

They join the continuing NSA officers: Vice President Margaret Farmer
(Facilities Services, Mission Support Services) and Secretary Donyale White
(Congregational Ministries Publishing, Congregational Ministries Division).

The Communications Office of the National Council of Churches (NCC)
has added two new staff members.

Daniel Webster will become the NCC's director of media relations
effective March 13. Webster, an Episcopal priest, worked for 15 years as a
journalist with NBC News and the Associated Press before entering seminary in
1993. For the past five years he has been director of communications for the
Episcopal diocese of Utah.

On March 1, Michael Hauck will become the NCC's first
technical-services director, responsible for expanding the NCC's Web and
electronic-publishing capabilities, managing its database and developing
electronic products to extend the ministries of the council's five program
commissions. He now works for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America at
its Chicago headquarters.
