³Denied Rights: Advocating the Rights of the Weak and the Deprived² was the theme of the workshop organized by the MECC Unit on Life & Service/ Service to Refugees, Displaced & Migrants, from January 23-25, 2006, in Beirut Lebanon. Representatives of churches and related organizations, civil society, UNHCR, EU Delegation in Lebanon, as well as MECC staff from Lebanon, Jordan and the Gulf participated in the event. . MP Mr. Ghassan Mukheiber supported the workshop with his presence and contribution.
Key note speakers highlighted the Christian Mission work in the multi-ethnic community of the Gulf States and the denied rights of the migrant workers in these countries, the importance of understanding the social, ethnic and political constituencies of Lebanon and the importance of advocacy for policy changes within the Lebanese society.
Trainers from Christian Aid UK, William Bell and Bethany Cobley delivered the training focusing on the advocacy process, starting from the identification of issues, the analysis and research needed, and the development of an advocacy strategy, with defined aims, objectives, key messages, target groups, allies, activities and events in addition to case studies and exercises. The workshop was positively evaluated in terms of efficiency and quality. A manual on advocacy was given to the participants.
