GAC plans extra meeting to elect new director
Only item on the agenda would be the choice of Detterick's successor
by Evan Silverstein
LOUISVILLE - A specially called one-day meeting of the General Assembly Council (GAC) may be scheduled before this summer's 217th General Assembly in Birmingham, AL.
The additional meeting would be held on May 23, probably in Chicago. There would be just one agenda item - the election of the GAC's new executive director.
The term of John Detterick, the current GAC chief, expires at the end of the Assembly in June.
The proposal to add a meeting was approved Tuesday (Feb. 7) during a regular meeting of the GAC executive committee. It now must be approved by the entire GAC.
Joey Bailey, the PC(USA)'s executive vice president, chief financial officer and treasurer, estimated the cost of the added meeting at $40,000. That money is not included in the 2006 per-capita budget, which covers the council's meeting expenses.
The additional meeting would probably be held at an airport hotel so that members could come and go quickly without an overnight stay.
Members of the executive committee said holding the election during GAC's next regular meeting in April would leave too much time between the naming of the new executive director and the start of the General Assembly. They said it could put the new director in the position of having to notify his or her previous employer prematurely.
A search committee has hired BoardWalk Consulting, a professional search firm, to help identify candidates for the position. BoardWalk specializes in finding executives for not-for-profit organizations.
