RICHMOND, VA - Author Katherine Paterson, a 1957 graduate of the Presbyterian School of Christian Education (now Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian School of Christian Education), is the winner of the 2006 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for Literature. The prize, which is awarded by the Swedish government and includes a check for $640,000, is the world's biggest prize for writers of children's books. The prize jury said Paterson was honored for her "deft aesthetic touch" in portraying "the inner strength and courage of her main characters." Paterson's first book, Who Am I?, was written in 1964 as a supplement to Presbyterian Christian education curriculum. Her other award-winning books include The Bridge to Terabithia, Jacob Have I Loved and The Great Gilly Hopkins.
