Deans' Conference to welcome Presiding Bishop as speaker, celebrant

[ENS] Presiding Bishop Frank T. Griswold will be the conference keynoter at the 53rd Annual Conference of North American Deans set for April 27 through May 1 at St. John's Cathedral in Jacksonville, Florida.

This year's theme is "Cathedrals - Spaces for Reconciliation."

Griswold will also be the celebrant and preacher at the 10:30 a.m. Eucharist in the cathedral on Sunday, April 30.

Seamen's Institute director to receive Servant of Justice Award

[ENS: Source - Diocese of New York] Douglas B. Stevenson, Esq., director of the Center for Seafarers' Rights at the Seamen's Church Institute of New York and New Jersey, is set to receive the Servant of Justice Award from the Guild of St. Ives of the Episcopal Diocese of New York on May 17.

Stevenson will receive the award during the Eighth Law Day Observance at St. Paul's Chapel, Manhattan, at 6 p.m. New York's Diocesan Bishop Mark S. Sisk will officiate at the Law Day Choral Evensong.

Homilist will be the Rev. Robin Griffith-Jones, Master of London's historic Temple Church, priest of the Church of England, and author of the "The Four Witnesses," a book exploring the New Testament.

The Servant of Justice award is sponsored by the Diocese of New York and its Guild of St. Ives, an association comprised of lawyers and judges. St. Ives is the patron saint of lawyers, judges and the legal profession.

Pasadena rector-emeritus honored by Death Penalty Focus

[ENS] The Rev. George Regas, rector-emeritus of All Saints Church, Pasadena, was the recipient of the Norman Felton and Denise Aubuchon Humanitarian Award at the 15th annual Awards Dinner by Death Penalty Focus, on April 19 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel, in Beverly Hills.

Regas was recognized for his work on peace and justice issues.

Other distinguished honorees at the event included actor Carl Reiner, Assemblyman Mervyn M. Dymally, Barry Scheck, Dorothy Ehrlich, and Victoria Riskin and David Rintels.

Founded in 1988, Death Penalty Focus (DPF) is a nonprofit advocacy organization of more than 10,000 members dedicated to abolishing capital punishment. Strategies include grassroots organizing, media outreach, nationwide coalition building, and educating political and civic leaders, and the public, about the death penalty and its alternatives.
