Monday Mission: Silicon Valley is priest-engineer's mission field by Phina Borgeson

[ENS] "Not long ago three of us coworkers had a long car drive to an offsite location on business," recounts Sheldon Hutchison. Others were surprised to learn that he is a priest, Canon Missioner to Silicon Valley in the Diocese of El Camino Real. Questions arose "about a lot of the dogma that's out there, the good and the bad." As Hutchison interpreted and explained the underpinnings of his theology, "the woman in the front seat turned and noted, with complete surprise, 'But that sounds...practical!'" This is where Hutchison hopes the Commission for Prophetic Witness to Culture and Technology, which he chairs, will go, pushing others to think, and helping them understand that theology can be practical and useful. In the church "We often look for 'relevancy' when we're really looking for 'usefulness,'" he adds.

Monday Media: Temple Church's Master writes 'The Da Vinci Code and Secrets of the Temple'

[Source: Eerdmans Publishing] -- The master of London's Temple Church, Anglican priest Robin Griffith-Jones, has written a new book commenting on the best-selling novel "The Da Vinci Code" -- set to debut as a movie on May 19. Griffith-Jones's new book, just released by Wm. Eerdmans Publishing Company, offers this back-cover observation: "As Dan Brown's 'The Da Vinci Code' speeds towards its climax, the novel's main characters -- Robert Langdon, Sophie Neveu and Sir Leigh Teabing -- come to London's ancient Temple Church, following a string of clues that will lead them to the secrets of the Holy Grail. In this church, that has withstood eight centuries of political turmoil, the Great Fire and the Blitz, are stone effigies of nine knights. Perhaps one of these bears the vital clue, here in the church built by the Knights Templar themselves -- the guardians of the very secrets which the characters are determined to uncover. "The real Master of the Temple...Robin Griffith-Jones...explores the novel's gripping claims. How much is true?" Also the author of the "Four Witnesses" book comparing gospel accounts of Christ, Griffith-Jones has based his new book on his talk "The Da Vinci Code," given regularly at the Temple Church. A video of the talk is online at www.beliefnet.com. More about the new book is online at www.eerdmans.com.

Monday Music: Britten's War Requiem at Washington National Cathedral

[Source: Washington National Cathedral] The Washington National Cathedral Choral Society, under the direction of conductor J. Reilly Lewis, will present a V-E Day commemorative concert of Benjamin Britten's War Requiem on Sunday, May 21, at 4 p.m., presented under the patronage of Ambassador and Mrs. John Bruton, European Union Head of Delegation of the European Commission to the U.S.A., An outcry against the brutality of war and a fervent plea for peace, the War Requiem was composed for the 1962 dedication of Coventry Cathedral, rebuilt in the wake of its destruction by German bombs in November 1940. Performing with guest soloists will be the Cathedral Choral Society, J. Reilly Lewis, music director, and the Washington National Cathedral Boy Choristers, Michael McCarthy, director. In tribute to the spirit of healing and reconciliation between the Allied and Axis powers of World War II, the performance brings together renowned artists with the same national origins as Galina Vishnevskaya, Peter Pears and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, the legendary singers for whom the Requiem was written. Making their Washington debuts are the thrilling Russian soprano Marina Shaguch and leading German baritone Markus Brück; acclaimed tenor soloist Robin Leggate, a Britten specialist, is remembered as a consummate Captain Vere in last season's Washington National Opera production of Billy Budd.
