Taiwan NGO Majors in Maize Taiwan Church News 2828 8-14 May 2006 Reported by Gan Hao-ran. Written by David Alexander
Mother¡¦s Day, marked on the second Sunday of May in Taiwan, will soon be upon us. In preparation for the holiday, the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families teamed with the Green Giant food company and the Chinese Culture University to host an activity last week in which children were taught to make and share snacks made from maize. Having made the treats, the children shared them with their mothers to the satisfaction of all present.
All wore ¡§Jolly Green Giant¡¨ aprons, while students from the university¡¦s culinary sciences department gave instruction. Seven different recipes were taught. In the end, they were displayed on a large round sectioned table, and mothers were invited to sample them. The holiday festivities were still more than a week away, but these mothers got a ¡§first taste¡¨ of good things to come.
The Taiwan Fund for Children and Families grew out of a charitable group from North America, the Christian Children¡¦s Fund, that began operating relief and aid projects in 1952. Since 1985 the organization has operated without foreign financial input, and since 1987 has begun supporting development and family support projects around the world.
