by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE * Frances Russell (Furlow) Jameson, a lifelong Presbyterian who served on the national staff of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and also created an innovative transition program for released prisoners in Georgia, died May 31 in Santa Fe, NM, after a long battle with cancer. She was 77.

The wife of long-time Presbyterian Survey (now Presbyterians Today) editor Vic Jameson, Furlow was born and raised in Florida. She briefly taught English and Latin in Florida public schools after graduating from Florida State University, but soon enrolled at the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, VA. After earning her M.A. in Bible she worked for 15 years at Presbyterian Survey, which was then based in Atlanta.

In 1974, Jameson completed her law degree at the University of Georgia Law School. Soon thereafter, she created and developed the BASICS program for the State Bar of Georgia, an innovative model for helping released prisoners make a successful transition back into the world. In 1980, Jameson started her own law firm with her friend, Margaret Fairleigh, specializing in estate planning and administration.

In 1986 she married Vic Jameson and they moved to Louisville when the national offices of the PC(USA) relocated there. When Vic Jameson retired in the mid-1990s, they retired to Santa Fe.

In addition to her husband, Jameson is survived by two stepsons, Ron and Mike, and their spouses, Leslee and Sylvia, respectively; four step-granchildren, Laurel, Ransom, Max and Jordan, as well as Jordan's wife, Kylie; and four cousins.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 10, at First Presbyterian Church of Santa Fe. In lieu of flowers, friends may make memorial gifts to the children's Sunday school or adult education program of First Church.
