Congo Choir Tour inspires worshipers at Sunday’s joint service
by Emily Enders Odom and Robin C. Oliver
BIRMINGHAM, June 18 * In sounds both throaty and rich, the Chorale Presbyterienne du Congo thrilled worshipers on Sunday at the joint service planned and led by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America and the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
Clad in orange as they sang and swayed, the choir truly appeared to be on fire for the Lord.
Composed of women and men from throughout the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the choir is in the United States for a nine-week tour. Having launched their tour in Sarasota, FL, at an international and multicultural event on June 16 and 17, they will leave Birmingham to perform throughout the Eastern seaboard and in the Midwest.
The purpose of the tour is to inspire a more hopeful view of this pivotal nation in Central Africa, and to encourage U.S. participation and aid in the DRC.
The 2006 Congo Choir Tour is a joint effort of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and its partners in the DRC. Free-will offerings at each tour venue will help to support education in the DRC through the Presbyterian University of the Congo Sheppard and Lapsley.
For further information on the Congo Choir Tour, contact Mr. Larry Davis, Business Manager, Presbytery of Philadelphia, 2200 Locust Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103-5596.
