Presiding Bishop preaches in Knightsbridge

[ENS] Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold, preaching at St. Paul's Church in Knightsbridge, London, July 23, spoke about a recent opportunity for reflection and conversation with a cross-section of primates of the Anglican Communion.

"Our meeting took place at Coventry Cathedral, which is well known for its ministry of reconciliation. The meeting was informal and gave us an opportunity to explore together that which we most deeply shared: a commitment to Christ and the future of the Anglican Communion. We were able to meet beyond our differing opinions at the level of the heart. I sensed the presence of Christ's compassion at the center of the circle in which we were placed. It was a profound and hopeful experience and one that we all agreed needs to be replicated again and again throughout the Communion.

"As I said earlier, this is not an easy season in the life of the Anglican Communion, but it is also a season of hope and opportunity. And why is this so? It is so because the compassion and truth of Christ at work in us can do with us and through us infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. They can draw us into new realms of growth and discovery. All of this will involve risk and require courage. And courage we do have -- courage grounded in the quiet confidence that flows from being loved by the One who is the source of all love and who sent Jesus among us to reveal this love and continues to pour love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.

"May we therefore as Anglican Christians across the world be faithful to this love. And may we be given the gift of compassionate hearts that burn with love for the whole of creation, a creation beset by violence and conflict -- and yearning for reconciliation and peace."

Bay Area welcomes new bishop

[ENS] The San Francisco-based Diocese of California welcomed the Rt. Rev. Marc Handley Andrus as its eighth bishop during July 22 investiture rites at Grace Cathedral and in July 23 visits to diocesan ministry sites. Bishop Harry Bainbridge, president of the Episcopal Church's Province 8, led the investiture on behalf of Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold. Presiding Bishop-elect Katharine Jefferts Schori concelebrated the Eucharist with Andrus, who is former Bishop Suffragan of Alabama. Bishop Michael Curry preached.

Andrus succeeds longtime California Bishop William Swing, who has retired after passing the diocesan crosier to Andrus July 22. Both Swing and Andrus received ovations during the investiture service widely attended from across the 81-congregation diocese.

ENS will carry additional coverage, links and photos in its July 27 Diocesan Digest.

Catalyst: The Rev. Mpho Tutu to help churches affirm their commitment to fighting hunger

[Source: Bread for the World] The Rev. Mpho A. Tutu, an Episcopal priest and daughter of Desmond Tutu, the Anglican archbishop emeritus of Cape Town, South Africa, will provide the scripture reflection in a new set of resources being released this summer by Bread for the World.

Each fall, churches across the country affirm their commitment to fighting hunger by celebrating "Bread for the World Sunday." During these worship services, congregations rededicate themselves to ending hunger in God's world and praying for those in need. They also give thanks for the work of Bread for the World, which has enabled people of faith to be effective advocates for hungry people. Bread for the World Sunday celebrations are held on a Sunday between World Food Day (October 16) and Thanksgiving (November 23).

Congregations can visit http://www.bread.org to pre-order free worship resources, which will be available in mid-August. Resources include:

* Worship Bulletin Inserts;

* A Reflection Resource written by the Rev. Mpho Tutu * A responsive prayer for use during worship * Stories about creative ways churches have observed Bread for the World Sunday

The Rev. Mpho Tutu is currently a Clergy Resident at Christ Church in Alexandria, Virginia. She is the executive director of the Tutu Institute for Prayer and Pilgrimage, which honors the life and ministry of her father. She chairs the board of directors of the Global AIDS Alliance.
