ELCA's Carthage College gets $5 million gift

by John R. Brooks, ELCA News Service

The Tarble Foundation, Los Angeles, gave $5 million to Carthage College, Kenosha, Wis., for development of a sports and performance arena, according to a college news release. Carthage College is one of 28 colleges and universities of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

The Tarble family has supported the college since the 1970s, providing financial gifts that total in excess of $20 million, the news release said. The late Newton Tarble is a founder of Snap-on Tools Inc. The new $11 million Tarble Arena, is expected to seat 3,000 people and will incorporate elements of an existing structure. That structure, which is the home of Carthage basketball and volleyball contests, is adjacent to the N. E. Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center, funded largely by a Tarble family gift in 1998.

Still in the design process, the Tarble Arena will include a multipurpose athletic court for basketball and volleyball contests, arena seating, classrooms, an indoor golf practice facility, locker rooms and a varsity athletic strength-training center. Sound and lighting are expected to improve athletic events, and expand opportunities to host concerts and comedy performances, the news release said. The Tarble Arena will be open for regional high school games and other community events.
