Mission: Ecumenical conference will explore women in religion, leadership roles

By Daphne Mack

[ENS] More than 60 female religion educators, leaders, activists and scholars representing various faiths from around the world are set to make their voices heard at the "Women in Religion in the 21st Century" conference, held October 17-19 in New York City.

Speakers, presenters and moderators from Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Baha'i, Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh, Shinto, Afro-Caribbean, and Zoroastrian faith traditions will participate in the Interchurch Center sponsored event.

According to Lois Dauway, chair of the Ecumenical Affairs Committee of the Interchurch Center, and conference chair, the gathering will be the first of its kind in size and scope for women and has been recognized and endorsed by more than 40 agencies internationally.

It will explore the roles of leadership for women, the impact of women in religious communities, how religion affects women's lives, and the historical perspective of women in religion.

"I think the conference is significant because the world is increasingly moving toward religious division and violence," said Abagail Nelson, vice president for program for Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD). "This conference gives women a chance to say that we together can be a source of hope and healing and that we can reach across boundaries and understand and support each other."

Nelson will be part of a panel discussion on October 19 that will focus on women as agents of change.

Music: London's Westminster Cathedral Choir tours U.S., performs in New York

[ENS] The Choir of Westminster Cathedral, London, under the direction of Martin Baker, will perform in New York City on Tuesday, October 17, as part of the St. Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, 2006-2007 concert series.

The 7:30 p.m. concert will include works by Christopher Tye, William Byrd, John Taverner, Arvo Pärt, Peter Maxwell Davies, Maurice Dupré, Anton Bruckner, James Macmillan, and Benjamin Britten.

Further information and booking is available at http://www.saintthomaschurch.org/Concerts.html.

Widely considered to be one of the finest choirs in the world, Westminster Cathedral Choir is touring the United States through October 25, also performing at Washington National Cathedral; the Cathedral of St. Paul in St. Paul, Minnesota; St. Louis Cathedral Basilica in St. Louis, Missouri; Visitation Catholic Church in Kansas City, Missouri; the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Cleveland, Ohio; and the First Union Methodist Church in Birmingham, Detroit. Please see local listings for precise concert details.

The establishment of a fine choral foundation was part of the original vision of the founder of Westminster Cathedral, Cardinal Herbert Vaughan, who laid great emphasis on the beauty and integrity of the new Cathedral's liturgy, and regarded a residential choir school as essential to the realization of his vision.

Daily sung Masses and Offices were immediately established when the Cathedral opened in 1903, and have continued without interruption ever since. Today, Westminster Cathedral Choir is the only professional Catholic choir in the world to sing daily Mass and Vespers.

Catalyst: "Living Faithfully as a Prayer Book People" from Morehouse Publishing, by John H. Westerhoff, 130 pages, paperback, $14.95

[Source: Morehouse Publishing] -- Episcopalians consider themselves to be people whose individual and corporate lives are shaped by the Book of Common Prayer, but aside from worship on Sunday morning, few know what fills its nearly 1,000 pages. John Westerhoff, Episcopal priest and Christian educator, walks readers through the ways in which the contents of the Prayer Book can (and should) shape the life of those who call themselves Episcopalians.

An excellent resource for parish study or reading in advance of seminary training, Westerhoff explores a brief history of the Prayer Book, and the ways in which it shapes Episcopalians as pilgrim and prayerful people. How Episcopalians live into their baptism, live a Eucharistic and reconciling life, as well as a life of wholeness and health are explored in detail. All of this, as Westerhoff writes, "helps us lead a holy life, and one day, to a holy death."
