Communion to celebrate first woman priest Li Tim-Oi on anniversary of birth

By Mary Frances Schjonberg

[Episcopal News Service] Special services in the countries where the Rev. Florence Li Tim-Oi, the first woman ordained a priest in the Anglican Communion, began and ended her ministry will be held in honor of the 100th anniversary of her birth on May 5.

One service is planned at Morrison Chapel in Macau on May 5. Tim-Oi served at the chapel during World War II. Macau is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. It borders Guangdong Province and is about 60 kilometers (37 miles) from Hong Kong, China's other Special Administrative Region.

The other will be held May 6 at All Saints' Chinese Anglican Church in Markham, Ontario, near Toronto. Bishop Victoria Matthews of Edmonton, the first woman bishop in the Anglican Church of Canada, will preside at the service; retired Massachusetts Suffragan Bishop Barbara Harris will preach.

Archbishop of Canterbury urges Nigerian Primate to cancel plans to install bishop

By Matthew Davies

[Episcopal News Service] The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams, has written to Nigerian Primate Peter Akinola asking him to cancel his plans to visit the United States and install Bishop Martyn Minns as head of the Convocation of Anglicans in North America (CANA), a conservative missionary effort in the U.S. sponsored by the Anglican Church of Nigeria.

The installation service is set for May 5 at the Hylton Memorial Chapel, a nondenominational Christian event center in Woodbridge, Virginia.

Anglican Communion communications director Canon James M. Rosenthal confirmed that Williams' letter had been sent to Akinola. "Many people have noted that such an action would exacerbate a situation that is already tense," Rosenthal said, "especially as we look forward to the September 30 deadline outlined by the Primates at their meeting in Tanzania and the Archbishop of Canterbury's planned visit to the House of Bishops."

ARTS

Artists, Church team up to create Christian 'clip art' symbols

By Jerry Hames

[Episcopal Life] Anyone who has searched for religious clip art or graphics to illustrate a weekly bulletin, poster or newsletter knows immediately how time-consuming such a task can be.

Now four Episcopal artists, commissioned by the Office of Communication's web department, have each created a set of 12 Christian symbols that have been placed on the church's website (http://www.episcopalchurch.org/symbols) for use at no charge for non-commercial purposes.

"From time to time, someone would call asking for free clip art or graphics, or asking if we could recommend a designer for a church logo or T-shirt," said Bowie Snodgrass, web content editor. "From these requests came our idea to commission some good, original Episcopal clip art -- making what might sound like an oxymoron into a created reality."
