Notes about people by Jerry L. Van Marter
The Rev. Kurtis C. Hess, professor emeritus of church administration at Uni on Theological Seminary-Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, VA, died A pril 25 at the age of 65 after a long battle with cancer. A native of Dayton, VA, Hess served on the faculty of Union-PSCE for 20 yea rs as professor of supervised ministry and director of Field Education and Placem ent. He also served as director of The Office of Institutional Effectiveness from 1 996 until his retirement in 2005. Hess also served as executive presbyter of Blue Rid ge Presbytery from 1978-1985, and served pastorates in Colonial heights and Grottoes, VA, and in Faison, NC. Hess graduated from Davidson College, earned a master of divinity degree fr om Union and a doctor of ministry degree from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chic ago. He was married to Jean Craig Hess. He is survived by three children and sev en grandchildren. A memorial service is scheduled April 28 at Campbell Memorial Presbyterian Church in Weems, VA. A service will also be held at Union-PSCE on May 3, giving th anks for the lives and ministries of three faculty members who died this year: Hess, Isabel Rogers, and Ben Lacy Rose.

The Rev. Mayra Castañeda, an American Baptist minister, has been named as sistant director of education and leadership ministries for the National Council of Churches. Castañeda was formerly coordinator of continuing education and director o f the Certificate in Theological Studies program at New Brunswick (NJ) Theological Seminary. Prior to that, she served as the national Christian education coordinator for the Board of National Ministries of the American Baptist Churches USA. The Education and Leadership Ministries Commission engages in ministries of education, faith formation, and leader development, including programs in age- and cul ture-specific curricula, curriculum research and development, professional nurture and su pport, and education and advocacy.
