LCMS World Relief and Human Care Teams With Erin Bode Group To Aid South African Youth
Jazz Artists Donate Time and Talent to Develop Special CD To Benefit South African Students
Making a first-ever foray into the music production business, LCMS World Relief and Human Care--the mercy arm of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod--announces the launch of an inspirational CD to raise funds to provide educational opportunities for South African youth. The CD, The Themba Girls with the Erin Bode Group, is available through a Web site, www.ThembaGirls.org <http://www.ThembaGirls.org> , for a donation of $25 or more.
The benefit CD is part of a campaign by LCMS World Relief and Human Care to raise funds for the Themba Trust, a nonprofit foundation that operates both a girls and a boys high school in Dirkiesdorp, a village several hours southeast of Johannesburg. This area is marked by great poverty, limited educational opportunities, and one of the highest HIV/AIDS infection rates in the world.
The Themba Trust serves approximately 500 students, and also provides the boarding and tuition costs for about a third of the students. Because of the tragic impact of HIV/AIDS, the foundation also provides for a growing number of students whose families can't afford tuition due to the loss of the family "breadwinner." Proceeds from the CD will be used to provide scholarships for these students.
Local jazz singer Erin Bode and her trio partnered with the Themba Girls choir, one of more than 15 choirs from Themba, to record the CD. The CD was introduced locally with a benefit concert held April 23 at the famed Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis. The local NBC television affiliate covered the event with exclusive backstage access and aired the story on Mother's Day. Visit the KSDK Web site to see and hear reporter Deanne Lane's story:
